Professional Freelance Writing for Agriculture and Equiculture

I write, I farm, I ride; not necessarily in that order.

My writing is diverse, ranging from pigs to poultry, horses to hemp, and crops to nutrient management. I have enjoyed writing and learning about everything from growing food in space to straw bale house construction. I specialize in concise, readable copy that leaves you informed, entertained, and feeling that your reading time was well spent.

If you need content that will make your social media page pop, give me a call. Regular posts will keep your page top of mind with your customers or friends. Have a look at my Marching Madness or Erin Extreme Cowboy FB pages if you want to see what I can do for you.

I am the former Communications Coordinator and VP of the Eastern Canada Farm Writers’ Association (www.ecfwa.ca), past director with the Ontario Pinto Horse Association and past director with the Extreme Cowboy racing organization in Ontario, developing and running their widely acclaimed Rookie Racing Series from 2015 through 2017.

In 2007 I was one of three winners in the Bright Ideas Contest with the Farmers Feed Cities Campaign – watch for those shopping bags sporting the yellow logo at a market near you. In 2012, I was honoured by my peers with the Q.H. Martinson Bronze Award in the Weekly Press Reporting through the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation.

My photo of our 'Sweet Grass Paints' on pasture placed 7th in the 2012 Pinto Horse Association of America International photo competition. It's in the photo gallery on the News page. My photo 'Holly & Spike' was runner-up in 2014. I received a Bronze award at the 2016 Canadian Farm Writers' Federation awards for my news photo 'Cider Spirits', published on the cover of the Ontario Farmer.

My first book project It's Been A Fun Ride has now been published (September 2013). It's a collection of stories by colourful local Erin businessman Ed Stewart, told in his own words. Copies are available at Stewart's Equipment in Brisbane, ON. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ed over the course of a year and transcribing and organizing the stories. It's a great read.

A few comments from readers, editors, and clients:

- "I just read a good summary article on HST in the horse industry and was happy to find your name when I reached the bottom! And I guess the fact that I read the whole article and not just the first 2 paragraphs, showed it was well written and worth the read."

- "Your leads really draw interest."

- "I like your writing. I think you connect with people. A nice talent to have."

- "Thank-you for writing an informative and accurate article. I am normally a little apprehensive about articles, but you hit it right on the $, everything in there is as was said."

- "I read the latest edition (of 'The Nib') a few minutes ago and found it both interesting and informative. Nicely done!"

- "I am retired now and don't pay much attention to agriculture anymore, but the occasional story catches my eye and lights a fire in my belly. Yours is the most recent. Keep up the good work Karen!"

"Thank you for that fantastic cover photo in Ontario Farmer, as well as the superb story inside, about Project SOY. We were indeed fortunate that you accepted our invitation to attend! We appreciate your efforts to cover the event and communicate the many aspects of University of Guelph research to your wide and vitally important audience."
